Congratulations to Jocelyn Dopson-Rodriguez, a criminal defense attorney at Sammis Law Firm, on recently being appointed to the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees, effective July 11 and ending January 6, 2026.

She was selected by Governor Ron DeSantis. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

Jocelyn previously served as a student ambassador in the FAMU College of Law. She earned her Bachelor of Science in legal studies from the University of Central Florida and her Juris Doctor from the Florida A&M University College of Law in Orlando.

Congrats to Leslie Sammis on her verdict yesterday in federal court with the Honorable Judge Thomas Barber. The U.S.A. seized $41,805.00 and about $30,000 in gold jewelry. The property was seized in Manatee County during the ex*****on of a search warrant at our client's home in late 2021. The case was stayed while the criminal charges were pending. The two-day trial happened on Monday and Tuesday. The jury checked all 9 boxes, and "No, " meaning the government must return all the property seized. It was a total and complete victory. Even better, the U.S.A. now gets to pay all the Claimant's reasonable attorney fees, which is mandatory under the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000 (CAFRA). The mandatory attorney fees provisions are intended to discourage overzealous Government actions in forfeiture cases. Woohoo!

Congrats to Amanda Brunson and Leslie Sammis on a "not guilty" jury verdict today at the Dade City courthouse in Pasco Couty. After a hard fought battle, our client walked out of the courthouse with us on a first-degree felony charge (punishable by life with a 25 year minimum mandatory). The courthouses in the Sixth Judicial Circuit will be closed on Monday, September 10, 2018, for Rosh Hashanah. Florida law requires a first appearance each day (even on holidays or weekends) so first apperance court in Pasco County begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Robert D. Sumner Judicial Center, 38053 Live Oak Ave., in Dade City. Happy Rosh Hashanah!

The courthouses in the Sixth Judicial Circuit will be closed on Monday, September 10, 2018, for Rosh Hashanah.
