Effective July 4, 2024, Louisiana law will allow any person 18 or older, who is eligible to possess fi****ms under state and federal law, to carry a firearm concealed on his or her person without a permit.

1) Due to a grandfathered local ordinance requiring a permit to carry a firearm, a permit requirement in New Orleans will remain enforced until August 1. It will only remain in effect until August 1, because the legislature repealed all previously grandfathered local ordinances concerning fi****ms this past legislative session effective August 1.

2) In the French Quarter, a conceal carry permit will be required within a thousand feet of the 8th District Police Station on Royal Street. This includes some of the busiest sections of Bourbon Street. The reason for this is that the 8th District Police Station will be utilized as a Vo-tech school for officer trainings. This triggers firearm free school zone laws. Also, as a reminder, there are schools throughout the city in almost every neighborhood and a permit will be required to carry concealed within a thousand feet of any school in New Orleans.
