While so much of the Louisiana coast is washing away, there is one rare place that is actually growing new land, and you can watch it happen from the sky. 🌊 The Wax Lake Delta in St. Mary Parish is one of the only spots on our coast that is building marsh instead of losing it.
Back in 1941 engineers cut the Wax Lake Outlet to carry Atchafalaya River floodwater away from Morgan City. Nobody planned what came next. All that muddy water carried tons of sediment out to the Gulf, and over the decades it settled into a spreading green fan of fresh delta, an intricate lacework of channels and islands teeming with birds and fish. 🐦
Scientists from all over the world come to study it, because it shows how the Mississippi once built the whole boot of Louisiana one grain of mud at a time. From an airplane it looks like a living, breathing leaf laid out on the water. In a state that has given so much land back to the sea, the Wax Lake Delta feels like a quiet promise that Louisiana can still make more.
