We are heartbroken to announce the death of our uncle, law partner, and mentor, Richard “Dick”Jacobs, who passed away yesterday at the age of 95. Dick was a fierce advocate for his clients, almost all of whom adored him. But he was more than just an advocate. He was a friend who would listen to them—even if what they had to say had nothing to do with their case. He never rushed a client out of his office or off the phone.

Dick loved the law and the practice of law. This led him to spearhead the New Haven County Bar Association’s annual Service of Remembrance in which we honor every member, lawyer or judge, who passed away during the year. The comfort that this provided to the loved ones of the recently departed was enormous. The service continues under the leadership of Dick’s son, our cousin, former partner and now Superior Court judge, Steve Jacobs. Our hearts are heavy.

Services will be held at the Shure Funeral Home, 543 George Street, New Haven, Connecticut Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Gifts in Dick’s memory may be made to New Haven Legal Assistance Association, 205 Orange Street, New Haven, Connecticut.

This is a photo of Jacobs & Jacobs’ client Garrett Wynne, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army – a job he always loved to do during the holiday season. Garrett continued to ring the bell even after he got sick, up to his tragic death in 2021, at age 44. Garrett’s untimely death was preventable. He had been an inmate at Garner Correctional facility in December 2017, when he went to the Garner medical unit with vomiting and abdominal pain. He did not get appropriate medical treatment and got worse for days until they finally sent Garrett to the hospital. By then it was too late, they had failed to diagnose an incarcerated ventral hernia – a medical emergency – and Garrett developed a serious infection requiring surgery. Unfortunately, Garrett never recovered and suffered from terrible complications until his death.

The State of Connecticut tried to escape responsibility for neglecting Garrett. They tried to get his case dismissed, claiming it was filed too late (even though Garrett was in prison and gravely ill during the time they thought he should have filed!). They tried to deny that it was their fault, even though expert doctors said that basic, routine medical testing at Garner would have revealed that Garrett needed to be in the hospital immediately, which would have saved his life. Attorney Allie Jacobs represented Garrett’s family in their wrongful death case, and achieved an incredible $2.25 million settlement against the State of Connecticut.

“We are proud of holding the State accountable for the awful injuries they caused to Garrett and the terrible loss to his family.” said Allie Jacobs, lawyer for Garrett Wynne. “People in state custody have as much right to medical treatment as the rest of us. In fact, the State of Connecticut should take even more care with inmates under their protection, since they are not free to seek out medical providers of their own choice. Nothing can ever fully compensate Garrett’s family for his death, but we hope that this settlement will make the State realize that they can’t get away with neglecting vulnerable people in their custody.”

Congratulations to Attorney Allie Jacobs on her hard-fought $1.25 million settlement against the State of Connecticut!

Our client was tragically killed in 2011 when his pickup truck was crushed by a roadside tree on Route 1 in Madison, during a heavy rainstorm. The trunk was partially rotted and it was a w**d tree, of a type known to have brittle wood and be prone to failing in bad weather. The theory of liability was that the tree should not have been allowed to reach such height. The State claimed it was “an act of God.”

After a valiant battle including 14 years at the Claims Commission, complicated legal issues, testifying before the legislature, multiple expert witnesses, and a successful judicial mediation, Allie achieved an amazing result for her client.

Thank you to our amazing clients for their patience and trust, and to Allie for never giving up!
