Plumbers have long been among the occupations at risk for asbestos exposure.

Before the mid-1980s, asbestos was commonly used in building and industrial materials because of its heat resistance and durability. Plumbers may have encountered asbestos while working with or around:

- Boilers
- Cement pipes
- Drywall and ceiling materials
- Gasket
- Joint compounds
- Pipe insulation
- Sealants
- Valves

Routine work like cutting into walls, removing insulation, repairing pipes, or replacing old fittings could disturb asbestos-containing materials and release fibers into the air.

Because mesothelioma can take decades to develop, plumbers exposed years ago may only now be receiving a diagnosis. At ELSM, we help plumbers and their families understand where exposure may have occurred and what compensation options may be available.

Asbestos was once commonly used in gaskets because it could withstand heat, pressure, and chemicals. These gaskets were found in pipes, boilers, valves, engines, and other equipment used across many industries.

For plumbers, pipefitters, shipyard workers, mechanics, factory workers, and maintenance professionals, working with or around these materials could lead to asbestos exposure. When gaskets were cut, removed, repaired, or replaced, asbestos fibers could become airborne and be inhaled.

That exposure has been linked to mesothelioma and other serious asbestos-related diseases, often years or even decades later.

At ELSM, we help individuals and families affected by mesothelioma better understand where exposure may have happened and what legal options may be available to them.

Many people diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos years, or even decades, before they ever became sick.

Because so many companies manufactured or distributed asbestos-containing products, identifying where exposure occurred takes time and experience. Our team works to uncover those details and help families pursue compensation from the companies responsible.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, understanding your exposure history can be an important first step.

Attorney Brian Kenney has dedicated his career to advocating for individuals and families affected by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.

As a partner at ELSM, Brian handles cases in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts practices. He has handled hundreds of mesothelioma cases on behalf of former tradesmen, servicemen, plant workers, and individuals exposed through cosmetic talc, secondhand exposure, or environmental asbestos exposure.

Brian’s work has helped clients better understand how their exposure occurred and pursue compensation from the companies responsible. For families facing a mesothelioma diagnosis, that combination of experience, investigation, and support can make all the difference.

Do you trust that your cosmetics have been tested for safety? Reality may surprise you.

According to an ELSM Law survey of 1,000 daily cosmetic users, 73% mistakenly believe the FDA tests cosmetics before they reach store shelves. And 46% believe asbestos testing in talc products is legally required.

Neither is true. There is no federal requirement for asbestos testing in talc-based products.

When Heather Von St. James was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in 2005, she was only 36 years old and had recently welcomed her first child.

Her exposure didn't happen on a jobsite. It happened at home.

Growing up, Heather would wear her father's construction work jacket, unknowingly coming into contact with asbestos fibers that had been brought home on his clothing. Decades later, that secondary exposure led to a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Faced with a devastating prognosis, Heather underwent an aggressive treatment plan that included surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Today, nearly two decades later, she continues to share her story and advocate for mesothelioma awareness.

Heather's experience highlights an important reality: asbestos exposure can affect not only workers, but also family members who were exposed indirectly.

For decades, Pearl Harbor served as one of the most important naval installations in the United States. During that time, asbestos was heavily used in ships, shipyards, and military facilities because it provided insulation, fire resistance, and durability.

Workers involved in ship construction, repair, maintenance, and operations may have been exposed to asbestos through:

- Pipe insulation
- Boilers
- Gaskets
- Valves
- Electrical systems
- Fireproofing materials

When these products were repaired, removed, or had deteriorated over time, asbestos fibers could become airborne and be inhaled by workers nearby.

Many former shipyard workers, military personnel, and civilian employees have since developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases linked to occupational exposure.
