A few days ago I came across a case like this

A retired woman suddenly received an email The message was simple Congratulations you have won $850000

At first she didn't believe it After all she had never participated in any promotion or contest But the email not only included a winning number it also provided a contact phone number and prize claim certificates

Out of curiosity she contacted the sender They told her the prize was real However according to the international prize redemption process she first needed to pay a document verification fee The amount was not very high only a few hundred dollars Thinking she was about to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars she paid the fee

A few days later they contacted her again saying the prize had been approved But before it could be released she needed to pay taxes Then came wire transfer fees account activation fees and international transfer fees None of the amounts were particularly large

But each charge was explained in a way that seemed completely reasonable Months later the prize money still had not arrived Yet she had already paid tens of thousands of dollars

In the end the prize notifications that had once filled her with excitement turned out to be nothing more than a carefully designed scam
