Labor Day Weekend 2026 plans — especially if you like trying new spots 👀

If you’re staying in or around New Canaan, CT this Labor Day weekend, save this one. From a Saturday morning at the New Canaan Farmers Market to wandering the newly renovated Bristow Bird Sanctuary, catching a movie at The Playhouse, browsing the Carriage Barn Arts Center, or getting pleasantly distracted by vintage finds downtown… there are plenty of ways to make the most of that last little stretch of summer.

And yes, I’m still thinking about the vintage glasses + ice bucket I found downtown for a bridal shower. 😂

What happens to oyster shells after they’re left behind? 🦪

Out on the Norwalk Islands in Norwalk Harbor, Connecticut, we went searching for clean, sun-bleached oyster shells — but not for dinner.

These shells play an important role in oyster restoration. Collected oyster shells, known as cultch, provide a hard, calcium-rich surface where oyster spat (baby oysters) can attach and grow.

After collecting hundreds of shells, the goal is to place them in mesh baskets and return them to the water, giving microscopic oysters a place to settle and helping support the health of Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound.

It’s a simple process with a bigger purpose: turning discarded oyster shells into habitat for the next generation of oysters.

Would you have guessed that an old oyster shell could help create a new oyster? 👀
