Mazraani & Ligouri is pleased to share that our client, Tim Puskas, has been added to the National Registry of Exonerations. The Registry includes individuals either exonerated or acquitted based on stringent, case-specific criteria including prosecutorial misconduct and use of junk forensic science.

This is the second person represented by Mazraani & Ligouri to be added to the Registry. Client James Louis was exonerated in 2021.

The National Registry of Exonerations is a project of the Newkirk Center for Science & Society at University of California Irvine, the University of Michigan Law School and Michigan State University College of Law. It was founded in 2012 in conjunction with the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law. The Registry provides detailed information about every known exoneration in the United States since 1989—cases in which a person was wrongly convicted of a crime and later cleared of all the charges based on new evidence of innocence.

“They offered him time served. My client said, ‘I didn’t do it. I’m innocent. It doesn’t matter if you’re telling me you’re going to open the jail cell door right now, I’m not going to say I did it just so I can get out of jail,” Mazraani said.

A Middlesex County jury on Wednesday found Timothy Puskas not guilty of murder in the death of William “Billy” McCaw, a college student whose body was found in New Brunswick in February 2014.

"We are pleased that the jury finally saw this case for what it was – something the court even failed to recognize – a devastating example of what happens when cooperators and informants are not closely scrutinized, when prosecutors are not held accountable and when law enforcement fail to investigate properly," Mazraani said in a statement.

In a second trial, Timothy Puskas was found not guilty on Wednesday of all charges in the 2014 murder of former Rutgers student William "Billy" McCaw.

“What happened to Dan Gelin was a failure on each and every level,” said Joe Mazraani, the family’s attorney. “Dan was executed, but he did not die at the hands of his assailant... It came at the hands of medical and corrections personnel at the Essex County Jail. He was made to suffer a slow, agonizing death over the course of hours, alone in his cell.”
