The City of New Bedford is still in the market for a tree this holiday season!

If you or someone you know has a potential tree candidate, please contact the Mayor’s Office at (508) 979-1410 to help the City spread holiday cheer!

Good morning New Bedford! It feels like summer is in the rear view mirror with school and football starting, and we promise we’re not trying to skip ahead to winter coats and hot chocolate just yet … BUT 🎄 the City is on the lookout for a tree to display on the front steps of the Downtown library this holiday season. A 30-foot Balsam fir is ideal, but we're open other species, or trees that aren’t quite that height. The tree does need to have a point on top for a star. And the great folks at the Department of Public Infrastructure will remove it from your property if needed. Anyone who has a tree for consideration should contact the Mayor’s Office at (508) 979-1410. Thanks all!

The NBPD is warning residents about an ongoing scam targeting current and former applicants of the City's Planning, Zoning, and Community Preservation programs.

The FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a nationwide alert regarding criminals impersonating city and county officials to solicit fraudulent permit payments.

Scammers are sending emails that appear to be legitimate City communications. These emails may include detailed invoices or requests for large payments, often through wire transfers. Some have originated from email addresses ending in .com, among other domains.

These emails and invoices are 𝐍𝐎𝐓 from the City of New Bedford. The New Bedford Department of City Planning will never request application fees through email.

Residents should not respond to suspicious emails or send payments. 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 verify fees directly with the City using an official phone number.

If you believe you may be a victim of a scam, contact our department at (508) 991-6350 to report it. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious emails and any payments they may have made.

Additional resources and reporting options are available through:

• FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): File a complaint at www.ic3.gov
• FBI Public Service Announcement: Read the full FBI alert at https://www.ic3.gov/PSA/2026/PSA260309
• Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC): The 24/7 Security Operations Center can be reached at (866) 787-4722 or [email protected].

To verify legitimate application fees, contact the Planning Department directly at (508) 979-1488.
