Today's Frequently Asked Question is, "How long do I have to file a lawsuit?"

The answer to this question depends on what state you're filing a lawsuit in and what type of case it is. This is called the "Statute of Limitations." This can be anywhere between two years and 20 years in Indiana.

In Indiana, you have two years to file a lawsuit for personal injury, property damage, trespassing, wrongful death, and malpractice cases. You have six years for oral contract disputes, fraud, and debt collection. You have ten years for written contract disputes. This can all vary by state. If you're looking to file a lawsuit and aren't sure how long you have to do so based on your situation, consult an attorney.

A power of attorney is a legal agreement that gives someone the right to act on someone's behalf. It is important to note that this is given, not taken, so the person must sign off on this themselves.

There are a few different types of power of attorney. In our office, we primarily draft and execute powers of attorney for financial and healthcare decisions. Both allow you to pick a decision maker (or fiduciary). Check out the infographic to learn more about what each type does.

Happy Harvest Homecoming, New Albany!

Craft and Food Booth Days starts today at 12:00pm, wrapping up this year's annual Harvest Homecoming Festival in downtown. We encourage you to get out in the community and enjoy the festival this weekend!

Our very own attorney, Jim Plitz, will be floating around this weekend and would love to say hi and chat! You can find him at the State Street Parking Garage with New Albany Main Street on Saturday 10/10 and the Floyd County Animal Rescue League booth on Sunday 10/11. We had our annual firm picnic this past Friday! The rain moved our usual potluck indoors and cancelled our co****le tournament, but we made the best of it with a series of competitive games and board/card games and conversation for the rest of the afternoon. We had a great time together celebrating a year of hard work and look forward to our next firm event!

Meet Annalise!

Annalise is our Administrative Assistant. She graduated magna cm laude from Hanover College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with departmental honors, and with minors in Sociology and Philosophy, in May 2025. Annalise has been at Waters, Tyler, Hofmann & Scott for nine months. She helps out around the office wherever she is needed, such as mailing letters, assisting with billing, and helping with scheduling as well as greeting and helping clients. She has also been managing the firm’s social media content since May. Her favorite part of working at the firm is the helpful and welcoming atmosphere within the firm.

In her free time, she enjoys photography, baking, listening to records, and spending time with her fiancé, Elijah, their cat, Samantha, and their families. She plays clarinet with the IUS community concert band and sings second soprano with the IUS community choir. She is also an alumna member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She hopes to attend law school in the future.
