It's What it is Wednesday!

What is a "Complaint"?

A Complaint is a legal filing, or Pleading, that initiates a civil court case. This document sets out all of the claims a Plaintiff (person who is suing) is putting forth against a Defendant (person who is being sued) and what they expect as a remedy for damages. Complaints are "served" to Defendants to inform them that they're being sued. Then, Defendants must then file a response called an Answer.

Meet Vicky!

Vicky is our Office Administrator. After finishing her degree in Administrative Office Management, she joined our team at Waters, Tyler, Hofmann and Scott and has been here for almost 15 years (her work anniversary is this weekend!). She has also worked here as a Legal Assistant and a Paralegal - if there's a task that needs doing or a problem that needs solved in the office, she's probably done it. Vicky loves untangling administrative challenges and finding ways to help our attorneys and staff focus on serving our clients.

In her personal time, Vicky loves traveling and going on new adventures with her husband. Whether it's a new city, a hiking trail, a bike ride, or a good book, she's always ready for then next journey.

Thanks for all you do, Vicky!

It's Frequently Asked Questions Thursday!

Today's FAQ is, "How do I get power of attorney for my parent(s)?"

Powers of attorney are given, not taken. This means that your parent needs to have a power of attorney in place that names you as the agent, rather than you seeking to have power of attorney for them.

Additionally, this kind of document must be in place before it is needed. Once a power of attorney is needed, it is often too late, because that person likely no longer has the mental capacity to sign a legal document such as declaring power of attorney.

No one knows when they might need to have given power of attorney to someone. Now is the best time to put this planning in place. Get in touch with our team today to set up a FREE consultation and get your planning in order!
