Mosher issues Life Saver medal to Detective Dawn

A Vernon County Sheriff’s Office employee was awarded with the Life Saving Medal on Wednesday as a result of an incident that took place in late March just outside of Nevada, MO. Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher announced that Detective Brett Dawn received the medal at the June Patrol meeting along with a letter of commendation.

According to Mosher, Detective Dawn responded to a report of a suicidal subject armed with a knife. While trying to talk the subject into putting the knife down, the subject turned the knife towards their chest, at which time Detective Dawn grabbed the subjects’ hands and pulled the knife away from their chest. The subject was tackled and responding personnel helped take the knife away. The subject was then transported to a hospital for additional care.

Sheriff Mosher said Detective Dawns quick response, recognition of the severity of the situation and immediate action resulting in a life being saved. Detective Dawn was issued a letter of commendation and received the VCSO Life Saving Medal as a result. “Law enforcement officers are often overlooked for the good they do. This was a situation that could have turned out much differently but ended without any injuries so we are proud to be able to recognize Detective Dawn for his actions” said Mosher.

After 37 years working in and around law enforcement, I have seen and experienced the dark side of what cumulative stress and severe and complex trauma can do to an individual in our profession.
The officer I showed the world for most of my career was the brave, strong, and hard charging officer, husband, and father, everyone expected me to be. However, at the risk of sounding cliché, not all wounds are visible. Inside my mind was severe depression, anxiety, severe trauma, and obsessive thoughts and numerous near attempts of su***de, which resulted in 9 psychiatric hospitalizations over the last 24 years: six of which while serving as a police sergeant.

Inside my book, 'Overcoming The Darkness: Shining Light on Mental Illness, Trauma, and Su***de in Law Enforcement,' which is now officially available on Amazon, I share my story, as well as address the issues of police culture, mental health stigmas, cumulative stress, complex trauma, addiction, su***de intervention, law enforcement family issues, and 8 principles for hope and recovery; which allowed me to become the Commanding Officer of the first Crisis Intervention Team in NYS.
