Is the relationship between radio and recording artists a balanced and fair relationship?

Consider: "In a move to undercut the National Association of Broadcasters’ argument that broadcast radio has long had a symbiotic relationship with the record labels by promoting the music and live events of artists, the survey also asked where people discovered new music. It found one in five (21%) rely most on AM/FM."

“This entire idea of promotional value is a reason for not paying artists is a myth – times have changed,” said Crowley. “Radio is no longer the promotional tool that it was a few decades ago.”

Looking to build support for the proposed law that would end broadcasters’ long-held exemption from performance royalties, the musicFirst Coalition today released results of a survey it hopes will convince

Congress recently took an important step that would bring more fairness to our industry by ensuring music creators are compensated for the use of their work on AM/FM radio. On June 24, 2021 Representatives Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Darrell Issa (R-CA) introduced H.R. 4130, the American Music Fairness Act.

Your support is critical to build support for this legislation in Congress. We need all music creators to use their voices and urge their members of Congress to support H.R. 4130.

The American Music Fairness Act would ensure performers and rights owners are compensated when their songs are played on terrestrial radio while exempting truly small, independent stations. And by creating a terrestrial radio performance right here in the U.S., the American Music Fairness Act would also ensure performers are paid when their work is played on the radio overseas.

When we speak with a loud, unified voice, Congress listens. That’s why we’re asking you to take action now. Click the link below to encourage your Representative to support this important legislation.

It looks like the sheriff has been doing his research on Content ID and Copyright. Interesting for a lot of reasons.... although I certainly don't condone them using this as a way to suppress free speech.

An Alameda County, Calif., sheriff deputy's plan to prevent a video from being posted on YouTube had the opposite effect: It went viral.

As I am fond of saying, in the near future, I don't think there is going to be any shortage of income from music and the copyright industries. The killer app is to be able to properly divide up the revenue amongst the creators and other stakeholders. Every step to level the playing field is a hard-fought battle that I hope we will all recognize. Then, of course, every good turn deserves another....
