In 2025, the Tennessee Innocence Project freed 4 wrongfully convicted Tennesseans and received 156 new applications from people asking for help. Justice Jam helps pay for that work. The benefit concert for the Tennessee Innocence Project and the Washington Innocence Project is Tuesday, October 27, at Cannery Hall in Nashville, with Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Dierks Bentley, Terri Clark, The McCrary Sisters, Angie K, Jaid Joice, and Bobby Messano.

We’re proud of you both.

Police in Middle Tennessee are running undercover stings on the gaming machines in convenience stores, gas stations, and shops, and store owners are the ones getting charged.

Tennessee defines gambling as risking something of value for a profit when the result depends on chance “to any degree,” so a machine sold as a “skill game” can still be a gambling device. Possessing one is a misdemeanor. Sharing in the machine revenue can bring a gambling promotion charge, and an ongoing operation involving 2 or more people can be charged as a felony. In August, a single operation in Columbia led to 22 search warrants, 144 seized machines, more than $1.3 million in seized cash, and 13 arrests.

Seized cash, nuisance actions against the property, b**r permit penalties, and a new 2026 law that adds civil penalties for hosting gambling devices can all follow the criminal case.

Mark Freeman, who leads the firm’s gambling device defense work, and Joey Fuson break down what Tennessee store owners need to know: https://www.fusonlaw.com/tennessee-gambling-device-laws

Most people facing a gun charge in Tennessee are looking at 2 different statutes, and the second one is the one that adds years.

Unlawful possession of a fi***rm by a felon is tiered by the prior conviction. A prior violent felony makes the new charge a Class B felony, a prior drug felony makes it a Class C, and possessing a handgun after any felony is a Class E. The second statute, possessing or employing a fi***rm during a dangerous felony, carries mandatory minimums of 3 to 10 years depending on the conduct and the record, and that sentence runs after the underlying felony instead of alongside it. Most of that time has to be served before probation, diversion, or any other release is even on the table.

Joey Fuson and Nick Schulenberg walk through how the 2 charges differ, what counts as a dangerous felony, and why the fi***rm count is often the most important decision point in the whole case: https://www.fusonlaw.com/tennessee-fi***rm-possession-charges

If someone in your family is facing a fi***rm charge in Middle Tennessee, call Freeman & Fuson at (615) 298-7272.

Tennessee has a new law on the books for anyone who rents out a home or rents one. Starting January 1, 2027, a residential landlord can’t use the lease to prohibit a tenant from lawfully keeping a fi***rm in their home, in their vehicle in the tenant parking area, or on the walk between the two.

Landlords keep some control. They can still require that fi***rms stay concealed, holstered, or cased in hallways, elevators, and other common areas, and the law leaves out hospitals, licensed care facilities, state-leased premises, and school property. A blanket “no fi***rms” clause in a lease that’s signed or renewed after the effective date is a different story, because a tenant who’s adversely affected can sue for an injunction, damages, punitive damages, and attorney fees.

Mark Freeman and Nick Schulenberg explain what Public Chapter 606 requires, when it applies, and what both sides should do before 2027 renewals: https://www.fusonlaw.com/tennessee-landlord-fi***rm-law

If you own rental property or you’re a tenant with questions about your lease, call Freeman & Fuson at (615) 298-7272.

Ethan is active-duty Army. When he was arrested for DUI in Williamson County, the charge alone froze his promotions and put his security clearance at risk, months before a jury would hear a word of evidence.

He hired Nashville criminal defense attorney Joey Fuson, who took the case to trial. The jury came back not guilty. When we asked Ethan about the experience afterward, this is what he said.

If you are facing a DUI charge in Nashville or the surrounding counties, the attorney you choose in the first week matters. Call our office at (615) 298-7272 to talk through your situation.
