“She’s completely alone, navigating this world with mental health issues that no one’s looking into.”

In an episode of the Unrestorable podcast, Christa’s attorney recounts a time when Christa’s father left her on the doorstep of her mother’s home even though no one was there. Throughout her childhood, Christa experienced sexual abuse and neglect that left her with PTSD and exacerbated her bipolar disorder.

This story did not begin with Christa Pike’s crime.
As Tennessee considers the ex*****on of Christa Pike, a new opinion piece in The Tennessean from Jennifer Escue and Barbara Holden Nixon challenges us to look beyond the crime and ask hard questions about trauma, accountability, and how we care for victims.

Christa has a well-documented history of r**e and sexual abuse. Yet family, community, and systemic responses all fell short of protecting her.

Tennessee has passed legislation to ensure that those who r**e children receive the death penalty. As they write: "If we take that seriously, we must be willing to reckon with our own role when systems fail to protect a child. We must also be held accountable and evaluate how we determine punishment, especially when the person was just 18 at the time of the offense.

The State of Tennessee knows that child r**e is one of the most horrific crimes that leaves a lasting impact on its victims. But instead of showing mercy to a victim, it plans to execute one on September 30.

Throughout her childhood, Christa developed Bipolar Disorder and suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome as a result of her abuse and neglect, but she never received the appropriate medical treatment or care. Even when she was encouraged to seek help, such as following her attempted su***de, her parents did not take her to follow-on appointments. Furthermore, no state actors followed up as to why Christa missed appointments and stopped care despite documented concerns about her health. It was only once she was in prison that she was properly diagnosed and treated.

Christa Pike’s mental health was shaped by years of trauma, instability, and sexual and physical abuse. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we want you to consider how Christa’s mental health impacted her decision-making. When severe trauma is left untreated, it can affect how a person thinks, reacts, and makes decisions. In Christa Pike’s case, her mental health doesn’t excuse what happened, but it does offer critical context for her behavior at the time of the crime. Learn more about Christa at mercyforchrista.org

Understanding how sexual trauma can impact attachment patterns does not excuse Christa’s behavior. But it does offer context for her mental state at the time of the crime. At the close of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize that trauma, especially when it is early and untreated, can shape how someone understands safety, relationships, and trust. In Christa Pike’s case, her experience of sexual violence shaped her development and vulnerability in adolescence. That context matters in order to fully understand her story.

In Episode 4 of Unrestorable: Proof of Life podcast, Dr. Bethany Brand, a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma disorders, describes the lingering impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). These experiences, which can include child r**e, sexual abuse, or other sexual violence, can shape behavior and rewire the brain over time. Christa Pike’s childhood was marked by severe and repeated sexual abuse and trauma, experiences that had lasting effects on her mental health and development.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, which is a time to recognize the long-term impact of abuse and the ways trauma can shape a person’s life. Learn more at the link in bio.
