All of us now know someone who has been impacted by COVID-19, either healthwise or economically. And If there is one thing we are learning right now, it to expect and prepare for the unexpected.
People who are young and healthy generally put off executing a will. The thought of dying is remote to us, and it’s an unpleasant conversation to have with our families. But we need to use this current pandemic as a wake- up call to put our affairs in order. What would happen to your assets if you suddenly passed? What if you are put on a ventilator? Would your family know what your wishes are if you are put on life support, or would they be forced to make a decision on your behalf because you do not have a Living Will?
In a world that feels uncontrollable right now, these are things we can control. At Gulf Coast Legal Group, we are ready to help you prepare both your will and living will. We have the ability to consult with you remotely, and we have staff who are now authorized to conduct the newly available online notarizations that are required. You can protect your family without stepping foot out of your house.
In the meantime, we've consulted with medical professionals who have shared a simple thing you can do right now to protect yourself in case of an unexpected hospitalization. On a piece of paper, write down:
1. Your name, date of birth, and two emergency contacts.
2. Your medical history: anything you are being treated for currently or in the past.
3. Every surgery or procedure you've ever had.
4. Every medication you take- even vitamins and supplements.
5. All of your allergies and the reaction you've had to these products.
6. If you have ever smoked, how much you smoke, how much you drink, and if you have ever used or currently use illicit drugs and how you use them. Be honest! The doctors will need this information to help you quickly.
7. The names of your doctors.
8. Where you keep your Living Will - and if you don't have one, call Gulf Coast Legal Group!
Once you have documented these things, make three copies of the paper. Give one copy to each of your emergency contracts and keep one for yourself in case of emergency.
Call us to set up a consultation. In gratitude for their current efforts, we are offering discounts to all medical personnel and first responders.
