Divorce after 50 has financial complexity that a standard case doesn't. Three things most people don't know going in:

Social Security — a 10+ year marriage may entitle you to up to 50% of your ex's benefit. Nine years eleven months doesn't qualify.

Healthcare gap — COBRA lasts 36 months. Medicare starts at 65. Factor the gap into your settlement.

Pension valuation — the statement balance isn't what a pension is worth in divorce. Getting it wrong is permanent.

One of the most overlooked parts of divorce is everything that needs to happen after the decree is signed.

Most people treat the final judgment as the finish line. In reality, there's an entire checklist that comes after, and nobody hands it to you.

Your will likely still names your ex as a beneficiary or executor. Your power of attorney still grants them authority over your finances. Your healthcare proxy still gives them medical decision-making power. Your 401(k) beneficiary designation — controlled by federal law, not your divorce decree — may still list them.

None of this updates automatically. Every item requires a separate, active step.

Shared accounts, synced devices, and family location sharing don't switch off automatically. Your spouse may have access to more than you realize.

Thinking about relocating after your Illinois divorce?

If your judgment includes a parenting plan, the 25/50 mile rule determines whether you need court approval.

In Cook and the collar counties — DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will — the threshold is 25 miles. Everywhere else in Illinois, it's 50.

Cross that line without proper notice and consent from the other parent or a court order, and you have a serious legal problem.

When people start thinking seriously about divorce, the first instinct is usually to protect finances — open a separate account, gather documents, find an attorney.

What almost nobody thinks about: their digital life is still completely open.

Shared iCloud and Google accounts give a spouse real-time access to texts, photos, location data, and calendar entries. Family location sharing stays active until you turn it off. Devices that were ever synced to a shared account can still provide a window into your daily activity.

Changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and unsyncing shared accounts should happen before almost anything else.

One important distinction: securing your digital life is not the same as moving or hiding marital assets. Courts treat those very differently. If you're unsure what's appropriate, that's exactly what a strategy session is for.

A note of caution: some of these steps may signal to your spouse that something is in motion. Take them only when you are certain you are ready to move forward.
