On July 4, 2024, we gathered at the historic courthouse square for the event, I titled “San Augustine Unity Through History: The Declaration of Independence.”
The tradition of lawyers reading the Declaration of Independence on courthouse steps is a meaningful practice that symbolizes our shared heritage, the pursuit of liberty, and the enduring importance of the Declaration’s principles. 🇺🇸 As a first-generation lawyer and law firm owner, I did not even this was a tradition or the significance of it. I announced this event just the evening before.
In less than 24 hours this event was organized and attended by many, commemorated by signatures of attendees. Ms. Willie Faye Garrett, our local legend, graced us with the national anthem—a powerful reminder of our heritage. Mr. Tori Barnes, our high school athletic director, led a heartfelt prayer, connecting us all. I then stepped forward and read the Declaration of Independence, a complex, 248-year-old document.
But let’s be real: It’s not an easy read and it’s even more difficult to understand.
So, I addressed the audience. Without understanding, we can’t enforce those rights. Access to our rights hinges on comprehension. My mission, as a lawyer and for my law firm, echoes my motto: “The law is complicated, but I can help.” That’s when I read a simplified version—one that makes the meaning of the Declaration universally accessible.
At the end of the reading, I lead the San Augustine School song and the crowd joined and we formed the iconic San Augustine Wolf hand sign and sang in unity. The people of San Augustine County care about the community and are committed to the community. I plan to continue this tradition next year, so mark your calendars.
