“I own a restaurant. While working with a sales guy, I was promised a certain rate on a merchant card machine and signed a 4-year contract to secure that rate. After a few months, the rate started creeping up. I called in to get them to correct it the first time, and then every time it increased a little more every few months, but nothing I figured I was just stuck with a contract, and didn’t want to deal with a hefty termination fee.

The first time I used the Small Business Legal Plan, I requested to speak with an attorney specializing in real estate matters in Texas. I conveyed my desire to understand the intricacies of buying and selling real estate in Texas.

The lawyer proved to be immensely informative, furnishing me with ample insights to embark on my real estate business journey. Given my lack of experience and state of cluelessness, the info I received made me dangerous … in a good sense.

I posed several questions, including:
• What are the pros and cons?
• What strategies yield the best results?
• Is a formal real estate license a prerequisite for effective real estate investment?

In response, the attorney answered all my questions and assured me a license wasn't necessary - a claim that contradicted suggestions I’d received elsewhere, so I asked why. His simple, impactful response was, ‘because you have us.’

I wholeheartedly embraced that statement for two decades. In my inaugural year, I successfully engaged in the buying of several residential properties. By the seventh year, I’d managed to craft a substantial real estate portfolio, spanning the gamut from residential to multi-unit and commercial properties. The Small Business Plan became a powerful tool for me.

Along this journey, I recognized the value of having EACH transaction subjected to meticulous document and contract review, and that is now a practice that has seamlessly integrated into my business routine.

"Last week my wife and I were in a horrible auto accident. An uninsured driver ran a red light while we were turning left on a green arrow. Our car was totaled and we sustained injuries which we're still dealing with today.

The first thing we did was call LegalShield. The lawyer who called us back an hour later gave us advice on how to handle the insurance company, the dealership, and the rental car company; he told us the insurance company would lowball us on the value of our 3-year-old car, and they did -- they offered $12K, but after I told them my lawyer told me to ask for comparisons to show value, the next minute they upped the payoff to $15K. Wow!!

Next, we found a car at a dealership. The dealer tried to charge us $2K for an 'appearance package'. HUH? Since our lawyer warned us about this, too, we balked and they relented. When given the purchase agreement, we told the finance officer we wanted our law firm to review the contracts first before we signed.

Interestingly, she dashed out and 15 minutes later came back with new contracts which she faxed to our law firm at 4:42pm. A lawyer called us back within five minutes and told us he'd review them in the morning. The next day, a lawyer called us and went over the agreement, page by page. We decided to sign.
