Why do I care so much about sexual harassment cases?

Because I’ve seen it firsthand. Early in my career, I worked alongside a young employee who was only 18 years old, and she was exposed to conduct she never should have experienced. Small incidents that were offensive, hostile working conditions, the kind of treatment that leaves a mark. That experience stayed with me.

It’s a big part of why I became an employment attorney. I wanted to be a voice for employees, women and men, who’ve been subjected to harassment in the workplace. This kind of conduct shouldn’t have a place anywhere.

Misclassification plays a bigger role in wage theft than most people realize. When an employer labels you an independent contractor instead of an employee, that often comes with a whole set of violations attached, missed meal and rest periods, no workers’ compensation, unpaid overtime, and missing wage statements or reimbursements.

Worried your case won’t hold up because you didn’t document it? The biggest reason retaliation claims fall apart isn’t a lack of retaliation, it’s a lack of evidence. Without something in writing showing you made a complaint and what followed, small details are easy to forget over time. Starting a written record now, even after the fact, can still make a difference.

Missed meal and rest periods are one of the most common forms of wage theft we see. If your employer isn’t paying that extra hour for a missed break, or if you’re working straight through your shift without any breaks at all, that’s not normal, and it’s not legal. Comp time and unpaid overtime often show up right alongside it.

One client, a high level executive in his forties, came to us with a severance offer already in hand, before he’d signed anything. The original offer was in the six figures, but measured against his salary and what he was being asked to release, it wasn’t enough. After understanding what rights he’d be giving up and what claims he might have, he went back to the table. His employer was resistant at first, but ultimately agreed to pay more. Nothing else in the agreement changed. The severance amount did.

If workplace harassment is affecting your mental health, seeking medical treatment matters for more reasons than one.

Getting care from a medical provider supports your health and safety first. It also creates documentation of what you’ve experienced and the symptoms that have come with it, whether that’s anxiety, sleepless nights, or panic attacks. If you’re dealing with harassment at work, take care of yourself and know that your experience is worth documenting.

Suddenly nobody at work is talking to you the same way? That shift might mean more than you think. Isolation, intimidation, and manipulation are often the first signs of retaliation, and they’re easy to brush off as ordinary workplace friction until a pattern starts to form.
