Why the Save Act matters! UPDATE - The SAVE America Act (also known as the SAVE Act) is a focal point of intense debate in the U.S. Senate as lawmakers push toward a self-imposed June 1 deadline to finalize the bill.
The legislation has seen significant movement over the last few days, particularly concerning how it might be passed through a divided Congress. The bill, which requires documentary proof of citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register to vote, passed the House in February 2026. In the Senate, the Republicans (holding 53 seats) are currently struggling to secure the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster.
Just two days ago (April 27), Senate Republicans attempted to attach SAVE Act provisions to a budget reconciliation bill—a move that would allow it to pass with a simple majority. However, this attempt has faced procedural hurdles and pushback from some members who want the reconciliation bill strictly focused on border funding for ICE and CBP.
How could the SAVE Act affect you? The SAVE Act will not allow a person to register to vote or cast a vote if their official government documents differ from their legal name. If your legal name is not reflected on your passport, social security card, or Real ID, or if your birth certificate and your legal name are different, the SAVE Act could keep you from voting. If you need an order of legal name change, now is the time to act. It will take time to get your legal documents in order once your order of name change is granted.
