Gerald L. Melton, Public Defender

Gerald L. Melton, Public Defender I have been serving the people of Cannon and Rutherford Counties as your Public Defender for several years.

My motto is: "Protecting the public by defending the Constitution." I can continue this important work with your vote and support in 2022. Public Defender services are obtained by making a request for a court appointed attorney. This request is made to the judge presiding over your case in General Sessions Court, Circuit Court or Juvenile Court. You will then make an affidavit of recourses that wi

ll be reviewed by the court, who will then act on your request for an attorney; either granting or denying the request based upon the information provided.

An earlier post somehow omitted. I want to thank everyone for the complimentary votes given to me in the May 3rd primary. It is heartwarming that so many of you did that. The general election is in August and I encourage everyone to vote in that election as many races are yet to be decided. For me, I will once again appreciate your complimentary votes and I look forward to continuing to serve you as public defender.

Due to FB rules, I can't post the video on this thread for comments, so if you view it on Corey's page, please feel free to come back to this post to let me know. Gerald

A former client sent me the following as a private message a couple of weeks ago. I have edited out the name. The sentiment of the message explains why it is so rewarding to serve as your Public Defender.
"I’m sure you remember me ______________ I just wanted to tell you thank you for saving my life over the years I was messed up for many years now I’m a better person by 100% I been out of prison since 08 and never had any more trouble except 1 speeding ticket lol just wanted to say thank you"

Great to talk with my friend Governor Bill Lee at the Republican Party luncheon today in Murfreesboro. The Governor and I met years ago when we worked on criminal justice reform on a panel advising then Governor Haslam.

I have released announcements to the media that I am seeking re-election to the office of District Public Defender for Rutherford and Cannon Counties. I will be a candidate in the Republican Primary to be held in May of 2022.

It is an honor to serve you in this important role to fulfill the right to counsel as provided by the Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution and Article One Section Nine of the Constitution of the State of Tennessee. Serving as your P***c Defender is a position of public trust, that I take seriously.

Along with the dedicated Assistant Public Defenders in our office, we act daily to defend the rights of people who are accused of crimes, so that the rights of everyone can be preserved.

I hope that the voters of Cannon and Rutherford County will once again trust me to perform this task.
