Divorcing parents are required to take a parenting class for two major reasons: (1) Divorce is hard on kids; (2) Divorce involves a lot of major decisions for adults.

Under Tennessee law, divorcing parents must take a 4-hour class โ€œconcerning how to protect and enhance the child's emotional development,โ€ including education on adverse childhood experiences. In certain situations, a court can waive the requirement and/or grant the divorce without it.

If you or a loved one have questions about the parenting seminar requirement, consult an experienced divorce lawyer for answers.

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote in the U.S.

Women began organizing and petitioning for the right to vote in the 1800s. The 19th Amendment was first introduced to Congress in 1978, but it took years of work before anything moved forward. Slowly, states started passing suffrage legislation and suffrage organizations came together to accomplish the goal of passing a constitutional amendment. When President Woodrow Wilson expressed his support of an amendment in 1818, things truly shifted, and the amendment passed through the House and Senate.

The final hurdle was for three-fourths of the states to ratify the amendment. That finally happened when Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920.

Rarely! In an ideal world, all children would be shielded from the emotional distress of their parents fighting in court; however, there are times when it is necessary for children to appear.

The most common situation I've seen is when that child is an eyewitness to specific conductโ€“ NOT when the child merely wants to share a preference for one parent over the other.

Determining whether this testimony is necessary in your divorce case is a delicate decision with potentially long-term consequences for your children. Make sure to consult an experienced child custody lawyer about this strategy!

On this day in 1790, the first U.S. patent was given to Samuel Hopkins for a new process to produce potash and pearl ash. These compounds were used in baking and in the production of soap, glass, textiles, and gunpowder.

Earlier that year, President George Washington had signed the Patent Act into law. The Act established a protocol for reviewing and granting patents and required President Washington to sign each. The very first one, with his signature, is pictured here.

Happy birthday, NASA! ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿช

On this day in 1958, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law, which created NASA.

In October of 1957, the Soviet Union launched their first satellite, Sputnik I, which orbited the Earth in 98 minutes. The Space Race had begun. By November, they launched Sputnik II, which carried the space dog Laika. The U.S. responded by sending up their own satellite: the Explorer I (pictured here). A few months later, the U.S. government formed NASA and doubled down their commitment to winning the race and sending a person into space. They did just that in 1969 when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.

There is a good chance it can change! In Tennessee, whether alimony will change if you remarry depends on the type of alimony you were awarded in the divorce.

Some types of alimony are non-modifiable, which means they will not change if you remarry. Other types of alimony are modifiable if certain life events occur, such as remarrying or cohabitating.

If you or a loved one have questions about your alimony changing, consult an experienced divorce lawyer before that life event happens!
