Debt doesn’t just disappear when someone passes away—and understanding how it’s handled is an important part of estate planning.

In many cases, outstanding debts are paid from the estate during probate before assets are distributed to loved ones. That’s why having a clear plan in place can make a big difference for your family.

Swipe through to learn more about how this works and what it could mean for your estate.

If you’re unsure how debt may impact your plan, I’m here to help. Reach out to talk through your options and build a plan that fits your needs.

Once your child turns 18, you’re no longer automatically able to step in for medical or financial decisions—even in an emergency.

It catches a lot of families off guard.

That’s where a few key estate planning documents can make all the difference, like healthcare directives and powers of attorney.

We help families in Washington put these protections in place so there’s no confusion when it matters most.

If your young adult needs help getting started, I’m here to make the process simple and personalized.

With National Senior Fraud Awareness Day coming up on May 15, I want to share a few of the most common scams I’m seeing so you can spot red flags quickly and protect yourself and your loved ones.

• Tech support scams – Someone claims your device has a problem and asks for remote access or payment. Legit companies won’t contact you this way.

• Government or Medicare impersonation – Calls, texts, or emails asking for personal info or payment. Real agencies don’t make unsolicited requests like this.

• Family imposter scams – A “relative” in urgent trouble asking for money fast. Always verify before acting.

• Sweepstakes or prize scams – You “won,” but need to pay a fee first. Real winnings don’t require upfront payment.

• Romance or investment scams – Someone builds trust online, then asks for money or pushes a “great opportunity.”

If something feels off, it probably is. Taking a moment to pause and verify can prevent a lot of harm.

If you have questions about protecting yourself or incorporating safeguards into your estate plan, I’m here to help.

May is Older Americans Month, which makes it a great time to revisit your estate plan and make sure everything still reflects your wishes.

A few simple steps can go a long way:

• Organize your key documents so the right people can access your will, trust, insurance policies, and account information when it matters most

• Take inventory of your assets—including digital accounts—and make sure your estate plan accounts for everything

• Think through your final arrangements and document your preferences to ease the burden on your loved ones

Estate planning is not just about documents—it is about clarity, control, and peace of mind for you and your family.

If it has been a while since you reviewed your plan, I am always here to help you make updates that fit your life today.

May is Older Americans Month, and it’s a great reminder to make sure your estate plan still reflects your life, your wishes, and the people you care about.

Here are a few key pieces I often review with clients:

• Revocable living trusts help manage and distribute assets smoothly, often avoiding probate and providing continuity if you become incapacitated.

• Powers of attorney allow someone you trust to step in for financial or healthcare decisions, so your family isn’t left navigating court processes during a stressful time.

• Advance healthcare directives outline your medical preferences and ensure your voice is heard, even if you can’t speak for yourself.

Thoughtful planning now can make a big difference later—for you and your loved ones.

If it’s been a while since you reviewed your plan (or you’ve never created one), I’m always here to help guide you through it.

When people think about estate planning, big assets usually come to mind first—but it’s often the personal items that carry the most meaning.

Without clear instructions:
• Family members can be left guessing
• Sentimental items may not go where you intended
• Small oversights can lead to unnecessary conflict

A simple tool like a personal property memorandum can help make sure those meaningful items end up with the right people—while keeping your will easier to update over time.

If your estate plan hasn’t been reviewed in a while, or you have questions about how to handle personal property, I’m here to help.

Naming a primary beneficiary is a great first step—but it is not the whole plan.

If that person cannot or does not inherit, and there is no backup in place, it can lead to:

• Assets going through probate
• Distributions that do not reflect your wishes
• A plan that lacks flexibility when life changes

That is why I encourage clients to include contingent beneficiaries and thoughtful provisions that keep everything aligned, no matter what the future holds.

If it has been a while since you reviewed your estate plan—or you are not sure it covers all scenarios—I am here to help. Reach out and let’s take a look together.

Spring is a natural time to reset—and that includes your estate plan.

I often remind clients that estate planning is not a one-time task. Your will, revocable living trust, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives should evolve as your life does.

If it has been a few years (or major life changes have happened), it may be time for a review.

If you are in Washington and have been putting off estate planning—or just need to update your plan—I am here to help make the process clear and personalized.
