When we send our children to school, we expect the adults who work there to look after them and to protect them. Unfortunately, that did not happen in this case, and a young girl had her innocence stolen from her.
The District knew that Mark Amantia was a danger to young girls since at least 2005. The District claims that the report made by the mother of an 11-year-old student in 2005 did not include allegations of “physical touching or any other improper behavior.” This claim is a complete lie. We have concrete evidence that the girl’s mother reported Amantia’s inappropriate s*xual behavior/touching to the principal, and the District did nothing about it. They protected Amantia then, and they have continued to protect him now.
Instead of being open and honest about what they know, current and former employees with critical knowledge in this case have shown that they are more concerned with self-preservation than the truth. They turned their back on Sara when she reported her concerns in 2016, and they have turned their back on her now by refusing to cooperate.
Rather than apologize for what happened to Sara, the District has resorted to victim shaming. This type of tactic is disgraceful, and it will not be tolerated. Victims of child s*xual abuse should never be treated this way. Sara’s bravery in coming forward and sharing her story publicly must be commended. I sincerely hope that the Hopewell community will come together and support Sara in this difficult time in her pursuit of justice.
