If you’re injured at work in New Jersey, one of the most important things to understand early on in the process is the difference between AUTHORIZED and UNAUTHORIZED treatment.
Here’s the key rule:
➡️ The workers’ compensation insurance carrier has the right to choose your doctors in exchange for paying for your treatment for work-related injuries.
That means:
✔ Authorized treatment → All medical bills paid for by workers’ comp
❌ Unauthorized treatment → You could be personally responsible for the bills
Most people, including those injured at work, may have never heard of this distinction before and how it can impact your treatment and, ultimately, your workers’ compensation case.
You should always speak with a workers’ compensation attorney shortly after a work injury, but especially before you decide to treat on your own.

Following oral argument, Kyle S. Reed secured a summary judgment victory on behalf of our client in a breach of contract and book account case in Bergen County that was litigated for almost two years.

The Court entered judgment for more than $70,000, including principal, interest, and costs — recognizing that the evidence was clear and undisputed.

No trial needed. Just facts, clear documentation, and the law on our side.

Two more wins for deserving clients — $50,000 in one case involving an uninsured motorist that caused the collision, which required us to litigate against our client's own insurer (yes, you sometimes have to sue your own insurance company!), and $100,000 as a partial settlement for a client who was a rideshare passenger at the time of the crash.

Some helpful tips on what NOT to do if you are injured in a motor vehicle accident:

❌ Answer phone calls from numbers you don’t recognize
❌ Sign anything from an insurance company
❌ Give any recorded statements

It is hard to overstate the impact even these seemingly small things (or large, in the case of signing documents) can have on a potential case in the hours and days following an accident. The only one to benefit, if you do not speak to attorney first, will be an insurance company down the road if a case is brought.
