SCAM ALERT - An alarming number of people have reached out to me about this text message going around today. I received it too. It says you have an outstanding traffic ticket and could lose your license. IT’S A SCAM! Here are a few ways to know why that is:
First, look at the sender. The .icu should be an indicator.
Second, Kentucky does not have a State Department of Motor Vehicles or even a DMV. The “Commonwealth” of Kentucky has the “Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.”
Third, there is no Kentucky administrative code or regulation numbered “15C-16.003.” It’s just made up.
Fourth, the website you are asked to go to to pay is also a HUGE red flag. Its ends with .vip.
Fifth and perhaps most importantly, you’re NEVER going to receive a text message regarding unpaid tickets or fines, especially ones you don’t know about. If anything, you would get a letter in the mail.
I’ve had three immediate family members receive this text message today. A lot of elderly people and/or people who aren’t too tech-savvy will be fooled by this. Please let your friends and family know: Don’t click on that link, don’t reply to that text. Just delete it.
