Some of you might be surprised to learn that I have been down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon twice. Both trips were amazing and I learned so much! It’s a feat I’m very proud of, and I try to use those lessons to survive. Have fun every day!

This has always been one of my favorite topics.

A potential “double dip” occurs when a court uses the same stream of income to value a business and then uses that same income to determine a maintenance/alimony payor’s ability to pay spousal maintenance/alimony. Check out the article, "The Potential Double Dip: When Income is Used To Both Value a Business and For Spousal Maintenance/Alimony" by Jim Vedder, Moss & Barnett. Read on to learn how various courts have differing opinions on the issue:https://www.aaml.org/wp-content/uploads/3.-The-Potential-Double-Dip_Aug.-2024.pdf

We don’t love the stereotype that lawyers “nickel and dime,” so we take all calls and questions into consideration before billing our clients for our time. We never want our clients to feel like they can’t call us if they have a question in fear of being charged, but as a rule of thumb: if you’re calling to ask a specific question about your case, that would be considered billable time working on your case.

Keeping your attorney included in your upcoming plans to be out of town is more important than you may think! Throughout the divorce process, there may be some appointments that require your attention or presence like a court hearing, mediation or deposition. Oftentimes it can slow down the process if we have to reschedule at the last minute or even worse if we are unable to reschedule and you are left having to cancel your plans.

Good rule of thumb, if you’ll be unreachable or unavailable for any period of time during your divorce, be sure to let your attorney know!

Our Story

Experience Counts

Taking the First Step Is the Most Difficult Part

The EGJ Family Law firm can help you through a difficult divorce or family law matter.

Our attorneys are guides with an excellent reputation for trying cases in the courtroom and resolving the most difficult matters. These matters include high-asset valuation, cases involving businesses, transmutation issues on inherited funds and other extensive property valuation. We work with forensic accountants when we determine with our clients that this expense is justified. We are always cost-conscious and will work for the most cost-effective solutions in your case.
