5 Important Reasons to Have an Estate Plan:

1. To Protect Assets- estate planning techniques exist to help protect assets from long-term care/nursing home costs.

2. Peace of Mind- knowing your estate plan reflects your intentions and avoids unintended beneficiaries.

3. To Protect Yourself During Incapacity- to name individuals you wish to manage your financial and healthcare decisions when you cannot and avoid a guardianship proceeding.

4. Avoiding Probate- a probate court proceeding can cause delay in distributions of your assets and be expensive. An estate plan and guidance from an attorney can help to avoid these issues.

5. Protect Beneficiaries- some families have individuals who suffer from disabilities, substance abuse issues or are just not good with money. A good estate plan can help you still provide an inheritance for these individuals without jeopardizing their public benefits or personal situations.
