Special Education Law New Jersey and Pennsylvania
While in school, Craig David Becker was classified with a learning disability in reading which was similar to dyslexia. He struggled throughout elementary and middle school and had an Individualized Education Program (“IEP”). He attended special education classes in language arts related subjects. With hard work and the help of his family Mr. Becker overcame his special education reading difficulties and began high school fully mainstreamed. In college, Mr. Becker realized that he had never properly learned how to read and had instead memorized most of the words in the English language. With tutoring help he learned how to read properly while in college and worked his way up to receiving a partial merit-based scholarship to one of the top law schools in the country, the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Mr. Becker became a public defender in Chester County, Pennsylvania. During his time in Chester County Public Defender’s Office Mr. Becker represented juveniles. He realized that many juveniles charged with crimes had learning disabilities or other special education needs. Mr. Becker learned that through proper advocacy, often he could turn the juvenile charges into a chance for the juvenile to get real and effective assistance for their education and other disabilities. Mr. Becker then transitioned to working as an Associate for law firms in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. One law firm he worked for represented School Districts in New Jersey with special education and other educational matters. This allowed Mr. Becker to obtain firsthand knowledge of the true workings of New Jersey School Districts, including the behind-the-scenes actions.
Mr. Becker and Mr. Herman are knowledgeable in special education services and the needs of special education students and disabled individuals as well as the relevant laws that apply to these areas. This allows them to effectively communicate with parents, examine educational records, in addition to being able to effectively cross-examine educational staff and litigate hearings for these matters. Over the years, this unique knowledge and ability have helped the firm obtain an excellent reputation within the New Jersey and Pennsylvania School Districts, along with opposing counsel. This allows us in many cases to quickly and effectively start productive dialogue with the School District or other entities in order to resolve an array of matters for our clients. In many cases, we have been able to successfully negotiate effective resolutions for a special education student’s without litigation or involving the court process. We also have we have been able to effectively compel School Districts and other entities to provide proper services by way of court action in cases where they are unwilling to engage in a cooperative effort with us to ensure the student or individual’s best interests. Our greatest joy as attorneys is seeing many of our former clients have successful and long-lasting educational and post-educational careers beyond our course of representation. Our firm represents individuals, in Special Education and Criminal Defense matters, throughout the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey with focus on the counties of Camden, Burlington, Gloucester, Ocean, Monmouth, Middlesex, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, Cape May, Mercer, Somerset, and Hamilton in New Jersey and Bucks County, Montgomery County, Delaware County, and Chester County in Pennsylvania
Mr. Becker realized that his passion rests with assisting students and families and other individuals with disabilities. In 2008 he opened his own law firm while simultaneously becoming Of-Counsel with the law firm of Gerstein Grayson Cohen & Melletz in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. He focuses his practice on representing students and families in disputes with School Districts, including disputes relating to Special Education, IEPs, Dyslexia, Autism, Bullying, 504 Plans, Accommodations, and other educational issues. Mr. Becker also represents adults and juveniles in criminal matters in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. As part of his criminal defense practice, Mr. Becker has a significant passion for assisting individuals with disabilities who are facing criminal charges. Utilizing his special education experience, Mr. Becker has been able to effectively advocate for individuals with special education needs and other disabilities who are facing criminal charges. He has learned that judges and prosecutors, especially in juvenile cases, are willing to reduce and, in some cases, dismiss, charges once they learn of an individual’s disabilities and the special education services the individual is pursuing to address those disabilities. Mr. Becker also represents adults with disabilities seeking services from the Division of Developmental Disabilities and related state agencies. In 2016, Brian K. Herman, Esquire and Mr. Becker starting working together as co-counsel on an education and special education law matters. In November of 2016, after realizing Mr. Herman’s shared passion for representing students and families with special needs and other disabilities, Mr. Herman became Of Counsel with the firm.
