On This Day in Michigan Legal History ⚖️

October 8th marks the anniversary of the death of Judge Lila M. Neuenfelt, a woman who helped change the face of Michigan's judiciary.

In 1941, Judge Neuenfelt became the first woman elected to the Michigan Circuit Court bench👩🏻‍⚖️

🗞️ The headline announcing her election:

“Justice Dons a Skirt”

Hard to imagine that headline today …

… But Judge Neuenfelt didn't just make history by becoming a woman judge.
She went on to preside over cases involving issues that are still very much a part of family law today — divorce, alimony, custody, and division of marital property.

🧐 More than 80 years ago, a woman was sitting on the bench in Wayne County deciding disputes involving families, finances, children and the end of marriages. The laws have certainly changed since then — but some of the questions have not:

🔹Who gets the house?

🔹How should property be divided?

🔹What about alimony (spousal support)?

🔹What happens to the children?

🔹And what happens when one spouse believes the other hasn't been completely forthcoming about the family's assets?

Those are not new questions.

What has changed is who gets to sit behind the bench and answer them.

Judge Neuenfelt's career is a fascinating reminder of just how far women have come in the legal profession — and how recently that journey began.

‼️ So today, on October 8th, let us remember a Michigan legal pioneer whose name deserves to be remembered: Judge Lila M. Neuenfelt‼️

A woman who didn't just practice law.

She helped make Michigan legal history.
