For many families, one of the hardest parts of navigating nursing home neglect and abuse is feeling like no one truly understands what they are experiencing.

They are overwhelmed, uncertain, and often carrying guilt while trying to advocate for someone they love. That is why this work is deeply personal to me.

Before becoming an attorney, I spent 13 years working inside nursing homes. I saw the realities families were often never told about like the impact of understaffing, the pressure placed on caregivers, the warning signs that were too often minimized, and the devastating consequences neglect can have on vulnerable residents.

Today, I use that experience not only to pursue accountability in court, but also to help families better understand the realities of nursing home care, recognize warning signs of neglect, and feel empowered to advocate for the people they love.

Too many families are left feeling powerless, uncertain, or afraid that they are “imagining things” when something does not feel right. My goal is to provide both the legal guidance and the educational support families need to feel informed, supported, and confident asking difficult questions when resident safety is at stake.

If you are worried about the care a loved one is receiving in a nursing home, trust yourself enough to ask questions. Advocacy often begins with recognizing that your concerns deserve to be taken seriously.

Most families dealing with nursing home neglect describe the same experience: they knew something was off, but the facility kept reassuring them that what they were seeing was just part of getting older.

Before becoming an attorney, I spent 13 years working inside nursing homes. I've seen what understaffing actually looks like, and families are right far more often than facilities want to acknowledge.

When a facility doesn't have enough staff on the floor, the signs follow a pattern:
» Repeated falls
» Slow response when a resident calls for help
» Sudden changes in mood or behavior
» Unexplained injuries or infections
» Declining hygiene

If any of this sounds familiar, that instinct is worth taking seriously. Families almost always sense something is wrong before they have the words for it.

Elder abuse is not rare. It is dramatically underreported because victims are often isolated, dependent on their caregivers, or afraid to speak up.

That's why awareness matters. That's why you matter.

In a New Jersey nursing home neglect lawsuit involving two facilities, investigators allege that Medicaid funds intended for resident care were diverted through related-party entities while the facilities remained chronically understaffed.

According to the complaint, the facilities operated as a single system that prioritized financial arrangements over staffing and care.

For residents, that disconnect showed up in daily conditions, staffing levels, and access to care.

We break down what the lawsuit brings to light about how the system works behind the scenes. This is something that happens more often than people realize, and it’s important to understand if you have a loved one in a nursing home or group home.

We are grateful for every caregiver who shows up with compassion, patience, and genuine dedication. The work is hard, and so many of you do it beautifully.

And for the facilities that cut corners, are understaffed, or look the other way, we will keep showing up for the families you failed.

If your loved one was harmed in a New Jersey nursing home or group home, please don’t wait. In New Jersey, time limits apply. If this happened recently, contact us promptly.

This week, we have been honoring skilled nursing care and the people who provide it. That matters, and I mean it.

But I would not be honest with you if I did not also say this: not every facility meets the standard. Not every resident receives the care they were promised. And when care fails, families are often the last to know and the first to be told there is nothing they can do.

That is where I come in.

I represent families across New Jersey whose loved ones were injured or died in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes due to failures in care. I review the records. I identify what went wrong. And I hold the responsible parties accountable.

Celebrating skilled nursing care means holding it to the standard it deserves. If your loved one is not receiving that standard of care, you have the right to ask questions and the right to get answers.

The people who provide skilled nursing care do some of the hardest, most important work there is.

CNAs who help residents eat, bathe, and move safely. Nurses who manage complex medication schedules across dozens of patients. Therapists working to help someone regain mobility after a fall or a stroke. Aides who sit with a resident at 2 a.m. because that resident is scared.

This is physical, emotional, demanding work. It requires patience, skill, and a level of compassion that most people never have to sustain for an entire shift, let alone a career.

When I handle cases involving nursing homes, the caregivers are rarely the problem.

The problem is a system that understaffs, underpays, and burns out the people doing the actual work. Good caregivers cannot provide good care when the system sets them up to fail.

This week, we honor the people who show up every shift. Thank you for what you do.

This week is about honoring skilled nursing care. So let’s talk about what good care actually looks like.

When a nursing home is doing it right, you see it:

1. Staff know your loved one by name. Not just the chart. The person.

2. You get answers when you ask questions. Care plans, medication changes, incident reports: none of it should be a mystery.

3. The environment is clean, calm, and consistent. Residents are groomed, hydrated, and engaged.

4. Staffing levels are adequate and stable. The same aides are not covering three halls at once.

5. Families are treated as partners, not problems. Good facilities welcome your involvement. They don’t discourage your visits.

I handle cases where care fails. But I also know what it looks like when care is done right. This week, we honor the facilities and the caregivers who meet that standard every day.

If you are not seeing these things at your loved one’s facility, that is worth paying attention to.

This week is National Skilled Nursing Care Week and it begins on Mother’s Day for a reason.

We honor our mothers. Our grandmothers. Our fathers and grandparents. The people who raised us, sacrificed for us, and loved us through everything.

The 2026 theme is “Moments in Bloom,” a reminder that everyday acts of compassion and dignity can grow into something beautiful.

Happy Mother's Day and happy start of !
