The death of any citizen by gun violence is a tragedy. This young man’s brotther was killed by gun violence on the same day. The evidence in this case was that he went to the hospital where his brother died, he took his mother home, they went to his grandmother’s home. Friends and family were with him all day and into the night. He was on his phone at home during the time he was accused of being across town at a murder scene. He was not identified by anyone living on the street. None of the videos showed him. And the cell phone evidence confirmed what he voluntarily told police. Yet he had to pay for a lawyer. Go through trial and now read about the complaints of the District Attorney after the jury deliberated and issued a ruling.
However, just because someone is arrested, accused, indicted and tried does not mean guilt. The prosecution bears the burden. That burden is beyond a reasonable doubt. The proof can not be obtained by trampeling on another person’s rights either.
A lot has been said in the media and by the District Attorney but the only two words that were spoken by the jury about this man were NOT GUILTY!
These words are the only words that matter. Complaining and stating the District Attorney’s office is working to change the law … that doesn’t change the jury’s statement.
Some of the things said about the attorneys in some of the social media posts that were liked by prosecutors that called the defense attorneys names seems a bit childish too. Especially since officers, prosecutors, community leaders, have sought legal advice and even legal representation from these lawyers.
We all have jobs to do. Every person in the community has the same rights under the constitution! Like it or not we have to work under the same framework. Judges, attorneys, officers, prosecutors, we are all human beings. You are exercising your rights to make those statements under the same constitution that protects the rights of every person that comes to court to testify, or every person charged with a crime. I know this to be true, if someone is trampling on your rights or the rights of your family member you will hope you have the opportunity to have one of the attorneys standing with you when that two word verdict is read to your loved one! And if your family member is hurt by someone you hope and pray those that investigate took the time to gather the information, look at all of it, make sure some one’s rights are not abused in trial that good lawyers will notice and act upon. The right to an attorney, the right to have some one explain your rights to you, the right to not provide statements or evidence against your interest or be compelled to do so are guaranteed to every citizen. Should a judge not ensure those rights to all citizens?
We fight for your rights!
