After owning this Kansas City home for 43 years, the original owners passed away and their adult children were left with a difficult situation: a house full of belongings, deferred maintenance, structural concerns, and no clear plan for what to do next.

When my dad got sick over 15 years ago, I had no idea how bad things had gotten. I would have loved if this photo represented the state of his house. Sadly it didn't; it was much worse. I lived states away, and by the time I learned the truth, his house was in such deep disrepair that a raccoon had moved in. His neighbor even named him Rocky. Yes, Rocky the Raccoon, like the song. It was the one thing that made me laugh during an incredibly difficult time.

KCI CrossFit is hosting a free community workout on 11.11.25 at 10 AM at Creekside Infield, Parkville to raise funds and collect essentials for Kansas City’s Veterans Community Project — a nonprofit dedicated to ending veteran homelessness, one hero at a time.
