When my dad got sick over 15 years ago, I had no idea how bad things had gotten. I would have loved if this photo represented the state of his house. Sadly it didn't; it was much worse. I lived states away, and by the time I learned the truth, his house was in such deep disrepair that a raccoon had moved in. His neighbor even named him Rocky. Yes, Rocky the Raccoon, like the song. It was the one thing that made me laugh during an incredibly difficult time.

That experience is a big part of why I now help families navigate what to do with a parent’s home when they’re sick or have passed. Dealing with a house that needs repairs or a full cleanout can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already stretched thin emotionally.

KCI CrossFit is hosting a free community workout on 11.11.25 at 10 AM at Creekside Infield, Parkville to raise funds and collect essentials for Kansas City’s Veterans Community Project — a nonprofit dedicated to ending veteran homelessness, one hero at a time.

Their goal this month: $30,000 to help outfit tiny homes and provide winter supplies for veterans in need. Every donation, every rep, every show of support makes an impact.

The Open Doors! Program is helping transform downtown KC by turning vacant storefronts into vibrant spaces for small businesses, artists, and property owners, just in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Through this initiative, the City of Kansas City and the EDCKC are offering grants up to $10,000 and lease subsidies to help activate local storefronts and bring new energy to our commercial corridors.

As someone passionate about Kansas City’s growth from the Northland to downtown, I love seeing programs that create opportunities for both business owners and investors.

The deadline for businesses to apply to the Open Doors program is Dec 5th; for property owners and managers, it's November 21st.
