Rachel Osband's top 5 recommendations for preparing for a divorce mediation:

1) Take time to identify your top priorities as well as areas where you feel you can let go.
2) Prioritize the needs of your children and be honest about what those needs may be.
3) Organize your financial information (no matter how big, small, positive or negative) and explore a post-divorce budget. Information is key!
4) Find/build a team to support you - friends, family members, therapists, energy workers, attorneys, financial advisors, etc.
5) Take care of yourself!! Divorce is a process and it can take time. Finding space away from the stress and decision-making is important.

Fiddler Osband Flynn recently celebrated a win with our clients in the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Court of Appeals, which affirmed the lower tribal court’s order restricting visitation to protect a membership-eligible minor child from endangerment and making an equitable division of property. Divorce litigation is tough, but we’ll rise to the task to protect you and your child’s best interests, regardless of the forum.

These families and children are not only victims of a gunman, but of a political system that is ill with the wrong priorities. We will continue to fight on behalf of our children when our politicians and the judiciary fail them!

A message from Abogada Delmar Flynn:

I struggle with writing this post because I struggle with my own Latine identity. Born in Mexico to a Mexican father and an Argentine mother, I was already destined for a “mixed” background. This was further compounded by emigrating to the U.S. at a young age, where I was taught to assimilate – change my name, pretend I’m “white” (which I am cause Latine doesn’t exclude race constructs), lie about origins. My name was an amalgamation of all these experiences – leading to my last name change in adulthood when I took ownership of my identity.

“Hispanic” heritage month is like my old name – it doesn’t include the full scope. (But what heritage/history month does over a mere 30 days/year??) The term “Hispanic” harkens back to Spanish conquistadors who pillaged indigenous communities and then mixed in slaves of different skin color, who appropriated it through violent invasions at every level – be it through s*xual assault or forced labor and slavery. “Hispanic” touches on the root but it is not all inclusive. “Hispanic” Heritage Month is about so much more, or rather, so many more.

You may say that perhaps Latino or Latina touches on those in this rich community without drawing a direct connection to direct descendants of Spain. But that only further excludes persons who identify as non-binary, or who wish not to be boxed in (I.e., only one ethnicity box? Really?!). This could be Latinx but it should be the more apt label “Latine”.

Labeling frankly sucks. But it exists. And if it’s going to happen, it needs to be all-inclusive. For more on “Latine”, read this article/comic – that although older, very aptly captures what it means to evolve as a member of the Latine community:
