I’ve been thinking a lot about Amir Locke and his family. My heart breaks that the Mayor could campaign on a no knock warrant ban— and then months later a family loses their son to that same violent policy that was never banned to begin with. Amir Locke should be alive.
Years later the same officer who fatally shot young Amir Locke was not only left to serve on the force but promoted with a position to head MPD’s use of force training. It feels like an awful twisted joke but it’s not, it’s the reality set forth by the Mayor of our city who is the sole elected leader with authority to direct MPD and change its policies.
Thanks to the family of Amir Locke, the advocates, and our community— Mayor Frey and administration leaders reassigned sergeant Hanneman in an effort to correct their horrible decision. Amir’s family and our community shouldn’t have had to demand this change because it shouldn’t have happened to begin with. Amir Locke should have been still here in our city alive and living his life.
It’s time for real change. Real police accountability by the Mayor, City Council, and every actor in the City of Minneapolis government.
That is why I will not be ranking Mayor Jacob Frey. We should never forget what happened to Amir Locke, his family, and community and all the harmful choice that followed after.
