SCAM ALERT – RENTAL FRAUD

The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a rental scam we have dealt with as recently as today.

Scammers are posting properties they do not own on social media and rental websites, advertising them as homes or apartments for rent. Victims are asked to pay an application fee or deposit, and once the money is sent, the scammer disappears.

⚠ How to Avoid Falling for This Scam:

✔️ Never send money (application fees, deposits, or rent) before seeing the property in person
✔️ Be cautious of listings that pressure you to act quickly or claim “lots of interest”
✔️ Watch for requests to pay using gift cards, wire transfers, Venmo, Cash App, or cryptocurrency
✔️ Be suspicious if the “landlord” refuses to meet, won’t show the inside, or claims to be “out of town”
✔️ Poor grammar, vague details, or prices that seem too good to be true are red flags

Common Red Flags:

❌ You’re asked to pay an application fee before seeing the property
❌ The person won’t allow an in-person tour
❌ The listing photos appear on multiple ads with different addresses
❌ The landlord avoids phone calls and only wants to message

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

🏆SECTIONAL CHAMPS AND STATE BOUND! 🏆

🏐 Our Volleyball team was victorious over Fall River 3-0 in tonight's WIAA Sectional Final at home to earn a berth in the State Tournament for the first time in program history!

Mineral Point will play Thursday, November 7 at the Resch Center in Green Bay in the State Semifinal at 11:30 am.

Match ups will be set during Sunday's seeding. The other D4 State qualifiers include: Eau Claire Regis, Manitowoc Lutheran, and Wabeno/Laona.
