Choosing a nursing home for a parent is one of the hardest decisions many families will ever make.

Before you sign admission paperwork, here are 3 things I would check:

1️⃣ Staff turnover rates.

High turnover can be a red flag for staffing issues, burnout, or management problems. A great starting point is ProPublica’s Nursing Home Inspect tool.

2️⃣ State inspection reports.

In Wisconsin, inspection reports are available through the Division of Quality Assurance (DQA). Most states have a similar agency where you can review surveys, deficiencies, and enforcement actions.

3️⃣ Visit unannounced.

Facilities know how to prepare for scheduled tours. Showing up unexpectedly may give you a more accurate picture of staffing levels, resident care, cleanliness, and overall culture.

No facility is perfect, but doing a little homework before admission can help you make a more informed decision for someone you love.

🚨 3 Things Insurance Companies Hope You Don’t Know 🚨

1️⃣ You do NOT have to give the other driver’s insurance company a recorded statement.

A recorded statement is a recorded interview about the crash, your injuries, and your treatment. In most cases, you are not required to provide one to the other driver’s insurance company.

Be careful. Something said innocently or out of context can later be used against your claim.

2️⃣ The adjuster may sound friendly, but their job is to save the insurance company money.

Most adjusters are professional and courteous. But at the end of the day, they work for the insurance company, not for you. Their job is to evaluate claims and protect the company’s bottom line.

3️⃣ “That’s our best offer” doesn’t always mean it’s their best offer.

Insurance claims are often negotiated. An initial offer is just that—an initial offer. Before accepting any settlement, make sure you understand the full extent of your injuries and damages.

The more you know, the better equipped you are to protect yourself after a crash.

💡‼️DID YOU KNOW residents with dementia may be at an increased risk of wandering or leaving a facility unsupervised?

Nursing homes and are supposed to assess residents for wandering risks and implement appropriate safety measures.

When a resident has a history of confusion, wandering, or exit-seeking behaviors, prevention starts with recognizing the risk.

Families should never hesitate to ask what measures are in place to keep their loved one safe.

‼️MANY PRESSURE WOUNDS ARE PREVENTABLE‼️

Residents in nursing homes who cannot move independently often need regular repositioning, skin assessments, hydration, nutrition, and monitoring.

A serious pressure injury can be a warning sign that something isn’t working as it should.

Pressure wounds don’t develop overnight.

One of the hardest parts about nursing home litigation has nothing to do with medicine, records, depositions, or lawsuits.

It's the guilt.

The daughter who tells us she should have visited more, even though she was there every week. The son who says he knew something felt off but didn't want to make waves, only because he was afraid of retaliation. The spouse who still wonders if moving their loved one into a nursing home was the wrong decision, despite truly having no other choice.

We hear some version of this in case after case.

And the truth is, most families did the best they could with the information they had at the time. Many were balancing jobs, children, aging parents, financial pressures, and impossible choices, all while a shiny, new facility is promising them their loved one will be safe and taken care of like family.

When something goes wrong, families often blame themselves first.

The families we meet are not neglectful. They are exhausted. They are grieving. They are trying to navigate a system they never expected to learn so much about, a system they are supposed to be able to trust.

Behind every chart, every care plan, and every lawsuit is a family that trusted someone to care for a person they loved.

We are here to tell you that you did the best you could with the information you had at the time. They broke their promises and broke that trust, not you.

‼️ Not every nursing home fall is “just an accident”…

Repeated falls can sometimes be a sign that something isn’t working as it should - whether that’s supervision, staffing, communication, or a resident’s care plan.

Falls do happen. But repeated falls should raise concerns.

Today, we remember and honor the brave women and men who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted each day.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also take a moment to reflect on those who never made it home and the loved ones who continue to carry that loss. 🇺🇸

💡‼️DID YOU KNOW that you don’t have unlimited time to bring a claim in Wisconsin?

Civil cases have what is called a statute of limitations, which is the deadline to file a lawsuit.

In Wisconsin, most (not all) negligence claims must be filed within 3 years from the date of injury.

Waiting too long can mean losing your right to bring the claim entirely.
