Choosing a nursing home for a parent is one of the hardest decisions many families will ever make.
Before you sign admission paperwork, here are 3 things I would check:
1ļøā£ Staff turnover rates.
High turnover can be a red flag for staffing issues, burnout, or management problems. A great starting point is ProPublicaās Nursing Home Inspect tool.
2ļøā£ State inspection reports.
In Wisconsin, inspection reports are available through the Division of Quality Assurance (DQA). Most states have a similar agency where you can review surveys, deficiencies, and enforcement actions.
3ļøā£ Visit unannounced.
Facilities know how to prepare for scheduled tours. Showing up unexpectedly may give you a more accurate picture of staffing levels, resident care, cleanliness, and overall culture.
No facility is perfect, but doing a little homework before admission can help you make a more informed decision for someone you love.
