STATEMENT ON THE INCLUSION OF WoLF IN THE WPIIP

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (February 9, 2021) – Please see the below statement from Attorney Andrew J. Golden, Managing Partner of Lagmann Inc.:

“As Managing Partner of Lagmann Inc., I have become aware of the inclusion of the Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF) in the Wisconsin Public Interest Interview Program (WIPIIP), a collaboration between UW Law School and Marquette Law School designed to provide employment and internship opportunities to students at Wisconsin’s law schools. After careful consideration and consultation with a number of sources, I have made the decision to continue Lagmann Inc.’s enrollment in the WPIIP despite WoLF’s inclusion, as I do not believe that punishing students for choices made by the administrations of both law schools is fair or reasonable. However, as a member of the Wisconsin legal community, I cannot sit idly by and watch this occur without comment.

Lagmann Inc. was founded on the principle of the medieval “lagmann,” the person appointed by the non-privileged to advocate to the local clergy and kings and to protect the “folkright” – the inherent, inalienable human rights – of the people. I can think of no human right more inalienable than the right to one’s identity, and I can think of no acts more repugnant than to discriminate or call for violence against another human being because of how they identify themselves. As such, I and the other members of my firm condemn in the strongest way possible any and all forms of discrimination or violence against Transgender or Gender-Non-conforming People, and we are dedicated to helping stem the epidemic of violence against the trans community, especially trans individuals of color. To suggest that an organization such as WoLF, who openly advocates for such discrimination and violence, should be taken at their word and provided access to university resources simply because they claim that they will not discriminate against law students based on gender identity is both laughable and unquestionably offensive. It is beneath institutions that claim to hold themselves to the high standards that our law schools do, and as a Marquette alumnus it is particularly disappointing that a school preaching “cura personalis” would stand silent in the face of the rhetoric espoused by organizations such as WoLF.

We are committed to the service of the indigent regardless of their identity, and any attorney or intern who joins us should honor that call to action. To those who wish to join us in that call and interview during the WPIIP, we welcome the chance to meet you. If there is any law student who withdrew from WPIIP but wishes to interview with our firm, we welcome your resume, and it can be sent to me personally at [email protected]. And to those people whose opinion of my firm and I have changed because of this statement, I am grateful that I have saved you the time and disappointment of hearing this directly from me in an interview.”
