If you are fired or laid off, your employer may request you to sign a release. This is a document in which you agree to waive your right to sue the firm in exchange for some benefit, usually severance cash.
If the release does not expressly waive your right to sue for benefits you are unaware of when you sign it, a court may overturn the release and enable you to sue for these claims.
