Not sure of the difference between being charged and being convicted?

Being charged with a crime is just the beginning of the legal journey; a conviction happens only after due process has been followed and guilt has been proven in court. Until that point, an individual remains legally presumed innocent.

If you get charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in another state while traveling, it could follow you home.

That is because of the Driver's License Compact, which is an agreement between most states to share information about driving infractions. This means that a majority of states share DUI charges, so your home state will likely find out about any potential infractions.

Here’s what can happen if you get an out-of-state DUI:

✅ License suspension in your home state and possible criminal record in both states (if DUI laws are substantially similar enough between the two states)
✅ Court appearances in the state where you were arrested
✅ Fines, DUI school, or probation depending on local laws
✅ Increased insurance rates

DUIs are serious — even across state lines. If you've been charged while away from home, give us a call, and we can connect on what to do next.

What percentage of cases do you think go to trial? Both at the criminal and civil level, the answer might surprise you. Take a guess before reading further.

⚖️ Criminal Cases: It's estimated that over 90% of criminal cases in the United States end in guilty pleas. Moreover, about 98% of federal cases and 95% of state cases are resolved via plea bargains.

⚖️ Civil Cases: 1% of all civil cases filed in federal court end up going to trial. Why so few? Because trials can be costly and lengthy, and the outcome is never guaranteed. Settling allows both parties to have a say in the resolution, often making it a more appealing option.

Do these facts surprise you? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments. And as always, reach out if legal matters surface. We are here to help.
