Big news for Virginia!

Clean Slate Virginia founder, George Townsend, was recently featured in a story from Radio IQ/WVTF Public Radio discussing Virginia’s new Clean Slate law and what it means for individuals working to move forward after past convictions.

Beginning this summer, the law will allow many eligible Virginians to have qualifying records sealed from public view, opening the door to better access to employment, housing, and other opportunities that can be difficult to rebuild after a conviction.

Signed by Governor Glenn Youngkin, Virginia's Clean Slate law allows some low-level felonies and misdemeanors to be sealed. Qualifying felonies require ten years of "good behavior" before sealing and qualifying misdemeanors require seven years.

Virginia’s 2026 Clean Slate Law allows certain felony convictions to be sealed from public view, giving eligible individuals a better opportunity to move forward without past convictions continuing to impact employment, housing, and other opportunities. Once a record is sealed, it generally will not appear on most standard background checks used by employers.

To qualify, individuals must complete a 10-year period without any new criminal convictions. After meeting that requirement, eligible individuals can petition the court to have qualifying felony convictions sealed from their record.

For the first time ever, certain criminal convictions in Virginia can be sealed from public view—thanks to new laws going into effect on July 1, 2026.
