You probably remember your early school days learning about the foundation of Wisconsin and the personal property tax that taxed almost everything anyone owned from jewelry to livestock. Over the decades, the personal property tax changed to focus primarily on taxing the personal property of businesses, with a long list of exceptions. Most Wisconsinites, including business owners, typically pay little attention to the personal property tax. But a recent development draws our attention to this forgotten tax – if only to forget about it again for the foreseeable future. On June 20th, Governor Evers repealed the personal property tax for businesses effective January 1, 2024. He did so with the signing of 2023 Wisconsin Act 12.

Congratulations on making it through 2020! Thank you for calling on us when you needed legal services. This year, instead of sending gifts or cards (and taking up precious delivery capacity), we are contributing to local organizations effectively delivering needed basics to local families. In honor of our clients and friends, we are contributing $1,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank and $1,000 to the Community Action Coalition of South Central Wisconsin. Each of these organizations continue, without gap or interruption, to care for those in need of food and shelter.
We are proud of the fact that during 2020, there was no gap or interruption in our ability to respond to your requests for service. We acquired what we needed to protect you and each other from the coronavirus, changed the way we did a few things, posted some reminders, consulted virtually or from afar, and carried on. It was inspiring and hopeful to experience you doing the same.
We encourage you to pause in solitude this holiday season to take a deep, calming breath - because you can. COVID and the other events of 2020 took our breath away. We’ve been busy helping clients with estate planning. The pandemic has us all on edge. We’ve been forced to face our fears, whether it’s the fear of becoming ill, losing a business or livelihood, or having to spend time alone. With all the anxieties and unknowns weighing heavy, it might feel like there’s suddenly a pressing need to get our affairs in order - just in case. On Friday, our law office conducted its first drive-in document signing! A couple ready to sign their Wills and Power of Attorney documents, stopped at the door to our office building and, never leaving their car, signed their documents in the presence of our two witnesses and a notary (using a pen they brought with them). Without leaving their car, the couple drove away with finished documents, copies, greater peace of mind and the satisfaction of completing an important task. We are fortunate our office building has a driveway at the lobby that made this easy for our clients and us. We are working by phone, video conferencing, email, remote notarization (where possible) and, yes, even drive-in.

Before the busyness of the holidays completely takes over, we want to pause to thank our clients, colleagues and collaborators. It is our good fortune to be able to work with you! This year, we will donate in your honor to The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy to assist in efforts to repair Conservancy areas ravaged by severe storms earlier this year.
