We try not to use our ninja skills in the practice of law but, the truth is no one really makes direct eye contact with Michael Corey anyway. The mission of Better Families Through Tae Kwon Do is beautiful, as the hundreds of attorneys, judges, doctors, accountants, their families and the rest of the South Florida community that have helped to create this Miami institution can attest. Mary Beth Klock-Perez and Diego Perez are legends and we love them. Nobody will mess with us now that we have backup! 😂

A pretty terrific ending to a very long and difficult situation. Having spent the better part of two years learning every thing about him, we are sure this remarkable young man will make the most of his second chance. I know I speak for Curt in wishing Marc and his family the very best moving forward.

A teenager caught up in a double shooting in Florida that left his older brother dead has been quietly deported to Canada following a remarkable standoff between U.S. federal authorities and the state judge who sentenced him.

Dear Friends,

I have some very important Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) information for your respective businesses. You know we don’t generally bombard you with legal updates (lest you unfollow us for annoying you) but this one is important. Last month, the United States Department of Labor updated some of its FLSA exemption guidelines.

The FLSA has many parts but, the one that most often seems to impact the daily lives of our clients is the requirement to pay overtime to non-FLSA exempt employees. What is so important about the updated guidelines is that they increase the minimum salary necessary to qualify for the so called “white-collar” exemptions (the “professional” “administrative” and “executive” exemptions), as well as the computer-related work exemption, to the overtime requirements. The Department of Labor increased the minimum salaries paid to these employees from $23,660 per year (or $455 per week) to $47,476 per year (or $912 per week). The Department of Labor also increased the minimum salary for the “highly compensated individual” from $100,000 to $134,004.

The primary effect of this change will be that many of the individuals who were paid a salary and met one of the other requirements of the FLSA exemptions (and thus were not required to be paid overtime) will now not qualify for the exemptions by failing to meet the minimum salary requirements. It possible that the total number of Americans who will feel the impact of this change (in one form or another) will reach into the millions.

The new guidelines take effect on December 1, 2016. See the link below for the actual language of the guidelines which include additional changes to prior FLSA law. The FLSA is an extremely complicated law. If you have any questions concerning the new guidelines or the FLSA generally (from either the employer or employee perspective), just give us a call.

It's been a difficult year for Marc and his family but Curt and I are very satisfied with the result. We want to thank the State Attorney's Office for taking another look at this case and realizing that Marc does not belong in Prison. Thanks to all of you who have reached out to express support for Marc and his family during this difficult situation.
