I discuss the tragic death of Wayne Zwang, a Chinese cruise passenger from Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas, who went missing during a hike on Mount Lima in St. Kitts. I explain why it’s crucial to book excursions through your cruise line rather than exploring on your own, as cruise lines track your location and ensure operators are vetted and insured. I share my condolences with the family and passengers affected by this incident.

🚨 Injured on a Cruise Ship? You May Have More Rights Than You Think.

Most passengers don’t realize that cruise lines often impose strict deadlines and special legal requirements after an injury at sea.

If you were hurt on a cruise ship, during a shore excursion, or while boarding or leaving the vessel, don’t wait until it’s too late to learn your rights.

I’ve spent decades representing injured cruise passengers and helping families hold cruise lines accountable.

We discuss an incident where an 84-year-old Carnival cruise ship passenger fell off the pier in Costa Maya, Mexico, and was rescued by fellow passenger Myron. While praising Myron’s heroic actions, we examine the concerning lack of crew or safety personnel on the pier and question whether adequate life-saving equipment was available. We also highlight the recurring danger of pier-related incidents on cruise ships.

I discuss another serious incident involving a Carnival cruise passenger. A 43-year-old Tennessee man was arrested for allegedly beating and strangling a teenager in the O2 Lounge aboard Carnival’s Mardi Gras ship last November. The arrest came six months later after the man was simply allowed to disembark. Most troubling is that the ship’s captain, Alessandro Lemmi, sent a letter to all passengers asking them to delete video footage from their phones as evidence of the crime, claiming the ship had sufficient CCTV footage. As a lawyer who has sued Carnival, I express serious concerns about trusting the cruise line’s evidence retention practices. The case is progressing with a court date scheduled for August.

I discuss the case of a 33-year-old Chinese cruise ship passenger who went missing while hiking Mount Limamuiga in St. Kitts. I share my professional perspective as a cruise line attorney, explaining the dangers of exploring foreign ports independently, especially without speaking the local language. I recommend always booking shore excursions through your cruise line, staying with experienced guides, and ensuring the cruise line knows your whereabouts and expected return time. I emphasize the importance of having a buddy and only attempting challenging hikes if you’re an experienced hiker prepared for emergencies.

I discuss a serious incident involving a 26-year-old crew member aboard Virgin’s Valiant Lady who reported being assaulted by a fellow crew member and romantic partner while the ship was docked in Italy. The alleged perpetrator was immediately disembarked and sent back to Peru, while the victim remained in Palermo. I examine how the cruise vessel safety and security act’s reporting requirements have significant limitations, as crimes occurring outside U.S. waters and involving crew members often go unreported in the DOT’s database. I also question Virgin’s policy allowing crew members to share cabins in relationships, highlighting how this situation demonstrates potential safety concerns with such arrangements.

We discuss a Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, a Dutch expedition ship off the coast of Argentina, where three people died and seven contracted the Andes virus strain. We examine whether the ship followed proper safety protocols, questioning if adequate quarantine measures were implemented, if passengers were properly warned, and whether the medical team had sufficient biohazard protection. We explore the broader question of whether cruise ships have adequate protocols to prevent viral outbreaks.

I discuss a federal lawsuit filed by Jorge Nunez against Carnival Cruise Line for injuries sustained from excessively hot deck surfaces on the Mardi Gras that reached over 100 degrees, causing serious burns to his feet. I share my experience prosecuting similar cases against Carnival, particularly highlighting the dangers for diabetic passengers who have reduced heat sensitivity. I explain how artificial teak decks in Caribbean sun can become dangerously hot and stress that cruise lines should be warning passengers about these hazards.

I discuss a major US Supreme Court ruling against cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and MSC, who must pay $440 million to the original owners of a Cuban dock facility that was confiscated by the Cuban government. The case was litigated in Miami, reversed at the appellate level, but ultimately decided in favor of the dock owners by the Supreme Court. I explain how cruise lines operated during the Obama administration’s window allowing passenger cruises to Cuba, and how the current Trump administration has banned US citizens from visiting Cuba. I also touch on additional legal arguments the cruise lines may still pursue.

I share the most critical piece of advice for anyone taking a cruise: purchasing travel insurance. As a lawyer who sues cruise lines and has investigated tens of thousands of claims, I explain why travel insurance is essential to protect you and your family from unexpected medical emergencies, surgeries, and emergency evacuations that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in countries where your regular health insurance won’t be accepted.
