When police show up at your home, it’s crucial to know your rights to ensure you’re protected. First, you have the right to remain silent. This means you can refuse to answer questions without an attorney present, which is essential for safeguarding your legal interests. Additionally, you have the right to refuse entry if the officers do not have a warrant. Politely ask to see a warrant before allowing them inside your home, as this is a fundamental protection under Florida law.

You should also inquire whether you are being detained. It’s important to clarify your status by asking if you are free to leave or if the police are there to investigate you. If you feel uncertain, remember that you have the right to call an attorney before speaking with the police. Consulting with legal counsel can provide guidance on how to navigate the situation effectively.

Moreover, documenting the encounter is advisable. Keep notes on what is said during the interaction, and if possible, have a witness present to corroborate your account. If the police do have a warrant, you must allow them entry, but you can observe the search and request a copy of the warrant for your records.
