19 years ago today, Hurricane Katrina made landfall and destroyed St. Bernard Parish and the lower 9nth ward in New Orleans. The devastation is best evidenced by the fact that only four of the approximately 26,000 structures in the Parish did not flood. The massive devastation was caused by the Corps handling of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet which became a storm surge super highway.

A group of brave residents sued the Corps of Engineers. After a 29 day trial, the US Federal District Court Judge held that the Corps was liable for damages because it was "malfeasant" and "monumentally negligent" with regard to its handling of the MRGO. The trial court's decision was originally affirmed by the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal.

In its original decision, the appellate court held that the Corps was not immune because it had offered little evidence on a particular point at issue. THEN, on rehearing the same three judges held that the Corps was immune. The only difference between the two opinions is that the "little evidence" in the first, conspicuously became "ample evidence" in their second opinion.

One Navy secretary and his allies in Congress fought to build more littoral combat ships even as they broke down at sea and their weapons systems failed. The Navy wound up with more ships than it wanted, at an estimated lifetime cost that could reach $100 billion or more.

The Navy’s haste to deliver ships took precedence over combat ability. Without functioning weapons systems the vessels are like a “box floating in the ocean,” one former officer said.

Littoral combat ships were supposed to launch the Navy into the future. Instead they broke down across the globe and many of their weapons never worked. Now the Navy is getting rid of them. One is less than five years old.

This story was originally posted in 2017. Since then there has been about 150,000 skin contact injuries, (30,000 a year for past five years), and approximately 20,000 amputations (4,000 a year for past five years). These injuries were 100% PREDICTABLE and could/should have been prevented. The table saw manufacturers need to be held accountable because they had the technology which would have prevented nearly ALL of these injuries but refused to implement it because it was too expensive. How much are 20,000 fingers and hands worth.
