Does your teen want to be involved in this year’s election but isn’t old enough to vote yet?

Indiana’s 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 gives eligible 𝟭𝟲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 the opportunity to participate on Election Day by serving as poll workers. The deadline to register to vote for the November election is 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. Already registered? It never hurts to double-check that your voter registration information is accurate and up to date before the deadline. On this 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember and honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day, the families forever changed, and the first responders and countless others who displayed extraordinary courage and selflessness in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

This year, we are grateful for the addition of a seventh moment of silence, honoring the first responders, recovery workers, survivors, and others who have since lost their lives as a result of 9/11-related illnesses and the lasting effects of exposure at the disaster sites. Their sacrifices and the enduring consequences of that day remain an important part of the legacy of September 11.

25 years have passed, yet the significance of that day has not faded. Today, we honor the memory of all those we have lost, recognize the sacrifices made by so many, and reflect upon the unity, strength, and resilience demonstrated in the days and years that followed.

Not all wills are created equal.

Online will-making tools are fast and cheap, but a fill-in-the-blank form can't tell you whether a will is even the right tool, whether a trust, payable-on-death or transfer-on-death deed would serve your family better, or that life insurance and retirement accounts pass outside your will entirely. It won't flag complications like blended families, a family business, or out-of-state property.

In Indiana, a will generally must be signed in front of two independent witnesses (those who have no relationship with the person signing the will) who are also required to sign it at the same time as the person executing the will. One mistake with any of the statutory requirements can invalidate the whole document.

A form fills in blanks and may lead to your will be invalidated. An attorney asks the questions you didn't know to ask and can help ensure your will is valid under Indiana law.

Paying your contractor does not always mean everyone working on your home has been paid.

Under Indiana law, contractors, subcontractors, and certain suppliers who provide labor or materials to improve your property may have the right to assert a mechanic’s lien if they are not paid. That can potentially create a lien against your property, even when the unpaid bill involves someone further down the contracting chain.

During storm repairs:
✅ Keep your contract, change orders, invoices, and proof of every payment
✅ Know who the subcontractors and suppliers are
✅ Keep any notices you receive from subcontractors or suppliers
✅ Consider requesting appropriate lien waivers or releases before substantial or final payments
✅ Do not assume that because you paid the general contractor, everyone else was paid

A mechanic’s lien can affect your ability to sell or refinance your property, so good documentation throughout the project is important.

Pay attention to who is working on your property, who is supplying materials, and where your money is going.

It is not unusual for contractors to discover additional damage after storm repairs begin. What matters is how those changes are handled.

Under Indiana’s Home Improvement Contracts Act (HICA), 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲-𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 and signed by the homeowner to be enforceable against the homeowner.

Before authorizing additional work:
✅ Get a written change order
✅ Make sure it describes the additional work being performed
✅ Make sure the additional cost is clearly stated
✅ Ask whether the change will affect the completion date
✅ Keep a signed copy with your original contract

🚩 Do not rely on “we’ll figure it out at the end.” An unexpected repair should not become an unexpected bill.
