More reports today of abuse in Michigan's prison systems. Our State is failing to address the issues that are plaguing the prisons. The staff nor prisoners are safe, and the solutions to many of the big issues plaguing the system are not easy. The longer Michigan continues to ignore the issues the worse it's going to get at the cost of the staff, prisoners, and all those who have loved ones who either are staff or inmates.
While prison issues tend to be ignored, it is basic human rights continuing to be ignored. The staff and prisoners are endangered every day with the inaction.
The staffing shortages are going to continue to get worse without action, and bringing in the National Guard is not a long term fix especially as they are not trained to handle inmate issues. While the staff are being forced to work mandatory doubles and overtime, suffering burn, out in a high alert, violent, and dangerous environment daily for a pay rate that is incredibly low compared to nearby states.....the inmates aren't getting yard time, programs meant to rehabilitate them, or proper healthcare. The prisons don't have good temperature control and both inmates and staff have had to suffer extreme heat in stagnating buildings.
How many people have to be hurt? How many human rights violations must be had? How many lawsuits need to be filed for the State to fix the issues?
At the Arbella Group, we advocate for staff and prisoners in hopes of bringing positive changes.
