A contested divorce typically takes 6 months to several years, depending on factors like the number of issues to resolve, the level of conflict, and court schedules. The process involves filing the petition, discovery, negotiations, and possibly a trial. Cases can be resolved faster through settlement, but trials are time-consuming and costly. The timeline varies for each case, but most contested divorces take about 12 months.

Under Washington law, a divorce cannot be finalized until at least 90 days after the divorce petition is filed and served.
