This is wrong. This has to stop. Officers need to be accountable for what they do and remember to still be good people while serving. I watch body cams from officers several hours each week. The difference between officers that care about people, and the ones that are just there to bully is astounding. Lets stop giving bullies badges, yeah?

These cold numbers don’t really show how desperate the situation is. 100 days. That’s over 3 months. These people are stuck in limbo because the reimbursement rate of public defender’s is less than 1/3 of what most private attorneys charge per hour.

We can’t say with a straight-face “innocent until proven guilty” when we can hold people for more than 1/4 of a year without even a preliminary hearing.

You want to know why innocent people admit guilt to something they didn’t do? It’s because the State has this kind of power. The initial confinement at the beginning of a case is worse than confinement as part of a sentence. At least when it is part of a sentence you can possibly get Huber, GPS monitoring (house arrest), and you know what to expect. And often the jail time for sentences are shorter than what many of these people have been sitting.
